Eating Disorder Therapy

I help people stop obsessing over their bodies & food, without letting insecurity make them miserable.

You are struggling. Despite being kind, hard working and high achieving, life feels hard.

When you see your reflection, when someone takes your photo, when you get dressed in the morning, the inner critic leaps into action to let you know what could be improved.

There is always something wrong with you. You try on 7 different outfits before leaving home, only to settle on your safe clothes, the ones that hide your flaws.

A bad photo makes you feel devastated, a good one elated. But you’re never satisfied you look good enough– you have to keep checking. You check by looking at your body in the mirror whenever you’re alone; you check by keeping a pair of jeans that are a little too small in your closet for “someday”; you check by keeping track of your weight, your measurements, your size.

You think- if you could just be a little bit thinner, then you would feel good about yourself.

When it’s time to eat, anxiety spikes again.

The drill sergeant comes in with its rules. The rules are harsh and don’t allow for much fun or spontaneity. If you listen to the drill sergeant, you feel calm for a little while, but there is always another meal, another hunger pang to contend with.

If you ignore the drill sergeants' demands and listen to your cravings, you feel momentarily exhilarated– followed by crushing guilt, shame and panic. You eat so much you feel like you’re going to burst. You make yourself vomit, you take laxatives, you swear you wont eat tomorrow to make up for it. Or you feel so overwhelmed by hopelessness and self disgust that you don’t even try to compensate. You just feel numb and resigned to hating your body.

Your obsession with food and your body is hijacking your life. You aren’t the kind of friend you want to be. You can’t connect with your family because you’re too consumed with keeping it all a secret. Your confidence at school and work is tanking.

You feel trapped.

Imagine feeling good about yourself, no matter what you eat or how much you weigh.

Imagine feeling confident when it’s time to eat, satisfied at the end, and not thinking about food until the next time you’re hungry. Imagine knowing when you’re hungry. Imagine not feeling guilty for being hungry.

Imagine buying clothes in your size and not giving it a second thought.

Imagine heading out of the house, not in a safe outfit, but in something that expresses who you are. Imagine passing a mirror, checking if you have something in your teeth and then moving on with your day, not giving your body a second glance. Imagine having such fulfilling relationships and a sense of purpose in the world that your body doesn’t feel that interesting anymore. Imagine thinking of it kind of neutrally- it’s the vessel that propels you around and you get to decorate, but it doesn’t say much about who you are besides that.

Therapy can help you find body neutrality.

Therapy can help you learn to eat normally (yes, it’s a skill that can be (re)learned). Therapy can help you feel comfortable in your body. Therapy can help you set boundaries and feel confident taking care of your needs, without letting guilt hold you back.

Together we’ll help you find peace and get unstuck.
