Therapy for anxiety and perfectionism
In-person & virtual therapy in San Francisco & the California area.
You wake up and hit the ground running, your mind racing with the day's to-do list.
You want to do things perfectly. You are meticulous and driven. The result is high achievement… and crushing anxiety.
You live with an uncomfortable revved up feeling. It’s hard to settle down and relax. There is always some goal you haven’t accomplished yet, some task you need to finish. If you’re ever forced to stop being productive (usually against your will) your mind doesn’t get the memo. It keeps racing from one thought to the next. When it has too much free time, your mind starts to think about potential tragedies; your loved ones' mortality, horrible diseases, global catastrophes. You’ve learned it’s better to stay busy to keep those spiraling thoughts at bay.
Sometimes your anxiety reaches a boiling point.
You start to panic at a crowded event. Your mind goes blank taking a test. You have a panic attack. Afterwards, you are exhausted and shaken up. You feel so alone in the experience. You try to manage your life to keep that feeling from returning. You avoid situations that could make you feel anxious. Your life gets smaller as you avoid doing things out of your comfort zone.
You want to feel peaceful. You want to feel confident you can handle whatever life throws at you.
You don’t understand why your best attempts to control your anxiety aren’t working. If anything, the anxiety seems to be getting worse.
Imagine not being controlled by your anxiety.
Imagine being able to go with the flow without worrying that anxiety will ruin the experience.
Imagine being connected to your friends and the fun you’re having, without your mind pulling you away to anxious thoughts you can’t escape.
Imagine knowing you can handle whatever comes your way; that you don’t need to alter your circumstances to shield yourself.
Your perfectionism is a tool you can use rather than a weapon that has to hurt you.
It helps you dream big and see opportunities others miss. You can use your drive, your insatiable need to climb the tallest mountain, to your advantage (you and Martha Stewart have this in common after all).
Being perfect is impossible, but aiming for perfection is a titillating pursuit; as long as when you inevitably fall short, you dust yourself off and relish how far you’ve come.
Because the paradox is you are already perfect, whole, in this very moment. When you see a baby laughing, it is perfect– there is nothing that could be added to make it more whole or perfect. You are no different.
I can help you strive for perfection when it thrills you, and turn it off when you’re using it to beat yourself up. I can help you quiet your inner critic and find peace.
